Fine Art Instruction in my Studio

I teach weekly classes and longer intensives in my studio on evenings and Saturday throughout the year. We cover drawing, painting both still-life and landscape (plein-air) as well as materials and techniques of direct and indirect painting.  For week long personal instruction in my studio, please inquire. We can suggest local lodging in the Asheville area.

Learn to use oils to exploit their depth of color and inherent qualities using mediums, glazing and use traditional grounds.  Make your own traditional gesso on panel. We will be working from still-life set ups, moving from drawing to finished paintings. Weather permitting, we can paint from covered porches in fresh mountain air. Some experience necessary.  Classes fill early.

Penland School of Crafts only recently began to offer painting and easel art.  This is a rare opportunity to paint in one of the most beautiful locations in Western North Carolina. Penland is  located between Burnsville and Spruce Pine, with a rich tradition of craftsmanship and professional training. 

This two week intensive in painting will give you a look at 17th and 18th century applications that allow for rich expressive use of oils to produce luminosity and jewel-like colors. Visit their website to learn more.

Studio Composition: Designing for Large Works

Develop confidence with oil paint’s special character of luminosity and longevity which result in expressive power of these materials.  We will cover pigments, mediums, varnish, grounds and as we prepare supports in the studio: wood panel, canvas, and gessoed paper. Paint application, color and pigment, including tonal techniques and learning to sketch with a brush are included. Traditional oils will be explained and demonstrated as we explore their use in the studio and field to capture atmosphere of the season.  All levels welcome. The John C. Campbell Folk School , founded in 1925, and a unique institution that seeks to bring out the best in people in a non-competing and supportive environment.  The school is residential with a wonderful painting location, new studio and  historic buildings near Murphy, North Carolina.
